Reaching for the Sun☀️

img_1270This morning I was cleaning my room, and I would be lying to say that it wasn’t an undertaking. Those who know me know that anytime I clean, it’s bound to look like a scene from a Disney princess movie – complete with dancing, singing, and maybe even a few animals.

As I worked, my pets danced around excitedly. They were playing and jumping in a happy little frenzy. Somehow my energy must have affected them because goodness gracious, they acted like crazy little munchkins.

*I would like to note that their “happy little frenzy” resulted in a pillow being torn up but that is somewhat besides the point*

The reason I’m writing this is because every day we are faced with so many sad and unfortunate truths. And don’t get me wrong, it is very, very important to face these truths and recognize them for what they are. But today I couldn’t help but think about what would happen if we all started to let go of the negative impact of these things and give them a little less space in our lives.

Our joy and our light can be so contagious, I don’t believe we could ever truly understand the effect that it has on others, much less the effect that it has on us. For someone, a happy greeting or a sweet smile could make all the difference in the world.

I’m sure that only the imagination could take a guess at what it would look like if people started to become the best version of themselves – if we all tapped into just a mere fraction of our potential and used it to make the world a much brighter place.

One of my professors has a favorite quote that he attaches to every email. A couple lines of it come from a speech by Nelson Mandela, but the rest are taken from an excerpt by Marianne Williamson.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world.

There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine, as children do.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.

It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.img_1274
